Born in England c1813, Duncan Cooper arrived in Australia in 1841. A colonial pastoralist he painted numerous watercolours of his 'Challicum' property near Ararat in Victoria as well as of Sydney Harbour and Tasmania. He returned to England in 1855 where he died in 1904.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $23,500 for Four Watercolours Depicting Challicum, Victoria 1844 sold by Deutscher~Menzies in September 2003. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2015. Works by Duncan Cooper are held by the Ian Potter Museum of Art, National Gallery of Victoria and Geelong Gallery.
