Born in New Zealand in 1917, Rosaleen Norton arrived in Australia as a child. She lived and became known for her murals in cafes in Kings Cross, Sydney. Her paintings often depicted images of supernatural entities such as pagan gods and demons, sometimes involved in sexual acts and in 1949 she held an exhibition at Melbourne University which was closed by the police. She was charged with obscenity, but acquitted. She has also contributed to 'Smiths Weekly'.
