Mary Durack was born in Western Australia in 1913, to the heritage of a pioneering family and is known as one of Australia's great literary figures. She wrote 15 books, the best known of which is Kings In Grass Castles, as well as short stories, poems, plays and film scripts. Her sister Elizabeth was born two years later and was a prolific artist. It is believed that some of the works attributed to Mary Durack were actually created in collaboration by the sisters. She was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for her services to literature in 1977 and appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in 1989.
