Born in Penrith, New South Wales in 1951, John Dent studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. After being awarded an Australia Council Grant he studied at the St Martin School of Art in London and at the Academia Brittania in Rome in 1973-74. A painter and printmaker, he has exhibited his work in England and Italy, and held his first Australian exhibition in Melbourne in 1976. He participated in the Twelve Lithographers exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1975 and Nine Printmakers at Melbourne University Gallery in 1978.
