Born in Ireland in 1834, Peter Power was the father of Harold Septimus Power. A hatter by trade, he arrived in Australia in 1852 to become a gold prospector at Ballarat. A self taught artist, Power painted romantic landscapes. He later married and sailed for New Zealand where he painted in the Dunedin area and exhibited with the Otago Art Society. He and his family returned to Melbourne in the late 1880s.
We have records of art auction sales by Peter Power from 1974 and in total 44 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 26 (59%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $11,000 for In the Mushroom Season sold by Leonard Joel in April 1999. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Peter Power are held by the Geelong Gallery.
