Born in New South Wales in 1879, Proctor studied under Julian Ashton in Sydney and with George Lambert in London, becoming one of the best known Australian women painters of her time. In London she painted 'fin de siecle' fan designs similar to those of Charles Conder. She returned to Australia in 1921, helping George Lambert form the Contemporary Group in Sydney, and gave much encouragement to avant-garde painters. Her work is represented in many state and provincial collections.
