Born in London in 1958, Peter Smales arrived in Australia in 1966. After mentoring and encouragement from Dudley Wood and Sir William Dargie he studied for and completed a Bachelor of Education at Melbourne State College, majoring in Painting in 1983. He subsequently taught painting and drawing there for three years. He has held exhibitions annually since 1982 in Melbourne, and also exhibited with the Victorian Artist’s Society.

The earliest auction listing we have for Peter Smales is in 1980 and in total 130 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 70 (54%) were sold.
