William Dunn Knox was born in Adelaide in 1880. He studied at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1919 winning a prize for drawing. As a businessman became the. manager of the Eagle and Globe Steel Co., painting on a part time basis. He was council member of the Australian Art Association and Victorian Artists Society, and a foundation member of the Australian Academy of Art. He painted in oil and occasionally watercolour continuing the tradition of plein-air landscape painting of the previous century.
