William Fernyhough was born in Rugeley, Staffordshire in 1809. With his wife, he emigrated to Sydney in 1836 and was appointed assistant surveyor and architect. A sketcher, silhouette artist, lithographer and draughtsman, he produced high quality lithographs and silhouettes, the former of which were included in Aborigines of New South Wales published in 1836. One of Fernyhough’s most famous productions was A Series of Twelve Profile Portraits of the Aborigines of New South Wales, a copy of which is in the National Gallery of Victoria. William Fernyhough died in 1849 at the age of 40, due to injuries sustained after "falling down". The Australian Art Sales Digest only records two works by the artist sold over the last 40 years.
