Born in Vienna in 1923, painter and sculptor Bert Flugelman migrated to Australia in 1938, and after serving in the Australian army in the later stages of World War II, he studied at the National Art School, at East Sydney Technical College. At the completion of his studies in 1951 he travelled overseas, and held an exhibition in London And New York, returning to Australian in 1955. In the 1970s and early 1980s he taught at South Australian School of Art, and after this, lectured at the School of Creative Arts, University of Wollongong, from which he received an honorary doctorate in 1995.
