Born in New South Wales in 1923, Molvig studied at the East Sydney Technical College, becoming known in the early 1950s through his entries for the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize, which he finally won in 1966 with a portrait of Charles Blackman. As an accomplished portrait painter he also painted other artists including Russell Drysdale and Barry Humphries. Molvig's early works (1955-61) have been compared to those of the American artist, William de Kooning. Assisting in his public recognition are his works painted in 1958/59 of Central Australia which incorporated Australian Aboriginal symbolism.
