Born in Sydney in 1909, William Pidgeon studied at the J.S. Watkins School and at the East Sydney Technical College. Best known as a cartoonist and illustrator, his work, signed 'WEP' has appeared in many Australian and overseas publications. He also wrote art critiques for the Sydney 'Daily Telegraph'. As a portrait painter he won many awards - including three Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prizes in 1958, 1961 and 1968.

We have records of art auction sales by William Pidgeon from 1974 and in total 34 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 28 (82%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $6,750 for Macquarie Street C.1954 sold by Lawsons in July 2014. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by William Pidgeon are held by the Australian War Memorial, Art Gallery of NSW and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
