Born in Brisbane in 1949 Leonard Brown studied at Central Technical College in Brisbane from 1965 to 1969. An abstract artist and teacher he has exhibited since 1986 in solo and group exhibitions in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. In 1975 he received a Special Projects Grant from the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council and in the same year began a study and practice of Byzantine painting from which he developed his interest in painting icons. In 2010 he was the winner of the Blake Prize for religious art and in 2011 the Queensland University of Technology Art Museum presented Union with Reality: The Art of Leonard Brown a 30 year survey of his work. In the 1990s and 2000s he travelled extensively in Britain, Europe, the USA, Russia.
