Born in Milton, New Zealand in 1888, and in the 1920s, worked with Union Steam Ship Company calling at ports around New Zealand and travelling to Canada and Britain. Largely self taught, he was painting at this time athough in 1922 he did spend a year studying at the Canterbury School of Art. Duncan Darroch lived nearly all his adult life in the Mount Cook area, having been appointed honorary ranger at Mt Cook National Park in 1954. He was known for his impressionist landscapes - particularly of mountains, and seascapes.
