Born in Taynton, England in 1886, Duke Mathews lived in Canada prior to his arrival in New Zealand in 1904 at the age of 18. In Auckland, he trained as a pilot but was declined for service in World War I. Instead, he turned to art, and by the end of the war, had established himself as a commercial artist. In 1929 he moved to Wellington and learned etching. He is best remembered for his etchings of New Zealand schools and universities.
