A landscape painter and portrait artist in the Impressionist style in watercolour and oils, James Govatt was born in Hawthorn in 1910. The family was often on the move as his father, Alexander, was a State Savings Bank Branch Manager. Whilst working as a bank clerk at the State Bank he studied Art the National Gallery School in Melbourne, and at the Max Meldrum School 1930-39. His mother, (Helena) Nellie Govett (1882-1965), was also a painter and studied with Max Meldrum from 1931-1950. He served in the Army in the Pacific during WWII for five years and was awarded the Pacific Star. After the War he moved to London where he studied under Thomas Dugdale at the Chelsea School of Art c.1947. He lived between London and Melbourne for a number of years having a studio at 22 Cheyne Gardens, Chelsea, London in the early 70’s.
