Son of artist and naturalist, William Swainson (1789 - 1855), George was born in Hertfordshire, England in 1829 and arrived in Wellington in 1841 with his family. He was educated in Auckland and worked as a surveyor. His pencil drawings and lithographs of New Zealand bush scenes are in the British Museum.
