Born in New South Wales in 1911, Long lived in the Mittagong area until 1934, and then until 1950 operated a watch-making business in Nowra. He began painting in the 1930s and his landscapes soon caught the public eye. In 1980 he moved to Melbourne to live with his daughter and son-in-law, He has held numerous exhibitions and travelled widely. He held his final exhibition in Yass, new South Wales in 2011 at the age of 100. In 1993, Leonard Long was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia 'for service to the arts as a painter of Australian landscapes.
