Born in Christchurch in 1917, Ainsley Manson was known as a painter and teacher. He was an official war artist during World War II, working in Europe and the Pacific. Manson was head of Timaru Technical College and director of Aigantighe Gallery and formed the South Canterbury Art Societry in 1954, later renamed the South Canterbury Art Society. He exhibited at the Canterbury Society of Arts and the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts from 1948 to 1965.
