About Nene Gare
Nene Gare (born Doris Violet May Wadham), artist and writer, was born in South Australia in 1919. She originally trained to be a painter and after marrying Frank Gare (a West Australian) and moving to Perth she continued to study art at Perth Technical College. Her artistic career was overshadowed by her success in the literary world and despite having several exhibitions in Perth and winning several awards throughout the 1970’s few examples remain of her artworks. She is best known for her 1961 novel The Fringe Dwellers which was later made into a film by Bruce Beresford in 1986. She remained in Perth until her death in 1994.
