Noel Counihan was born in Melbourne in 1913, and studied extensively in Australia, Europe and Russia. Began his art career as a caricaturist and was also a painter, illustrator and cartoonist, but it wasn't until 1941 that he first painted in oils. In 1934 exhibited drawings of life on the dole during the depression. From 1940 he was recognised as the leader of social realism in Australian painting. Counihan exhibited regularly with the Contemporary Art Society. His work reveals a deep sympathy for the working class.
