Born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1878, Alfred Baxter was a businessman who eventually became a professional artist. He studied under Samuel Moreton and in Europe from 1929-33 under some of Europe's best art teachers. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Paris Salon before his return to Christchurch where he continued to exhibit his work.
