Born in Melbourne in 1862, Mahony studied at the New South Wales Academy of Art. He worked on the staff of the 'Pictorial Atlas of Australasia' and 'The Bulletin' and taught at the Royal Art Society School in Sydney. Mahony gained popularity for his paintings of horses and country scenes in the 1890s. In 1904 he went to England, but failed to gain recognition as an artist and died there in obscurity in 1917.
