Born in Cheltenham, Victoria in 1889, George Neville was a painter and newspaper engraver. He was inspired by Oriental art and specialised in small decorative fan designs on silk inspired. He studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Schools in about 1910 and became a member of the Victorian Artists’ Society and he exhibited there and at the Fine Art Society in 1926-27, he earned a living from painting throughout the first years of his marriage in the early 1900s, and then worked on the daily newspaper, The Argus from the 1940s until his death in November 1954.

The total number of works by George Neville offered for sale by auction since 1972 is 38, of which 26 (68%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $4,600 for The Revellers sold by Christies in April 1998. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by George Neville are held by the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
