Born in England in 1843, Louis James Steele studied extensively in Paris and Florence. He exhibited at the Royal Academy where he became known as an engraver and etcher. He arrived in New Zealand in 1886 and opened a studio in Auckland. Principally a portrait painter, he taught several well known artists, the most famous being Charles Frederick Goldie.

We have records of art auction sales by Louis Steele from 1973 and in total 79 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 51 (65%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $459,228 for Sir John Logan Campbell at Kilbryde, Parnell C. 1902 sold by International Art Centre in August 2017. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Louis Steele are held by the Auckland Art Gallery and Museum Of New Zealand.
