Born in Melbourne, Nan Hortin's art training began at the George Bell School. During the late thirties she exhibited with the Contemporary Art Society, moving to Sydney in the mid-forties. She was an active committee member of the Studio of Realist Art; both artistically and politically, occasionally writing for their Bulletin. She moved to Queensland in the late forties and had an exhibition at the Moreton Galleries in 1950.
