Born at Raetihi, New Zealand in 1940, Philip Trusttum moved to the South Island and studied at the University of Canterbury School of Art. Initially influenced by Rudolf Gopas, Philip Trusttum's work is painted in an abstract expressionist style depicting experiences from his everyday life. In 1967 he was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council scholarship, and since then has travelled and worked in Europe and North America. In 1984 he exhibited as a representitive of ANZART at the Edinburgh Arts Festival, 1984 and in the same year he exhibited in New York. Since then he has shown in Sydney, New York, Melbourne, Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin and Christchurch. In 1998 he was the only New Zealand artist reviewed in the New York Times.
