Margery Edwards Australia, 1933-89

Born in Newcastle, New South Wales in 1933, Margery Edwards went on to study at various institutions including Sydney, the Brera Academy of Art in Milan, and the Morley College Art School in London before settling in New York in 1974. There, she developed her distinctive style of abstract painting and collage, which was heavily influenced by the Abstract Expressionism movement that dominated American painting in the late 1940s and 1950s. Edwards preferred viewers to form their own interpretations of her art, which is why she titled her works with the initials "NY" (for pieces created in New York) and a number, rather than a descriptive title. Her first exhibition in New York in 1978 showcased a series of black paintings. In addition to painting, Edwards also created a significant body of work on paper, including collages, prints, and visual diaries. These served as a record of her ideas and experiences, sometimes providing a lighter and more humorous contrast to her darker and more intense paintings. Throughout her life, Edwards produced a series of images that documented both her physical and spiritual journey. Her work is held by numerous institutions including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Canada, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Margery Edwards passed away in 1989.
