Born in Victoria in 1912, Klytie Pate (nee Sclater) studied drawing, painting and sculpture, and trained as a teacher in Melbourne. Her aunt, the artist Christian Waller, influenced her interest in the art deco style and classical mythology. She married William Pate in 1937, and taught until 1945 when she resigned to become a full-time professional potter. Pate exhibited regularly in the eastern capital cities from 1941.

The earliest auction listing we have for Klytie Pate is in 1983 and in total 82 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 70 (85%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,780 for Relief Foliate and Leaf Decoration in Green Glaze with Art Nouveau Stylized Decorations sold by Amanda Addams Auctions in August 2007. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2020. Works by Klytie Pate are held by the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia and a further five major public national galleries (see list below).
