John Cobby was born in the western suburbs of Melbourne in 1957 and spent his early years pursuing a passion of horse riding. He is a self taught artist who has experimented with various styles of painting over the course of his artistic journey. When he was 19 years of age, he first began to dabble in watercolour painting, taking inspiration from his experiences of trailing the landscape on horseback and the colourful characters met along the way; horse dealers, farriers and the like. John Cobby now works exclusively with oils, a medium better suited to capture the lively colour and character of the Australian landscape. Studying the styles of portraiture and surrealism as well as landscape painting, John has honed his ability as a skilful and versatile painter. He became a full time artist in the 1990's shortly after being discovered by art dealers Evan and Simon Mackley. He has lived most of his life in rural Australia and continues to be inspired by the landscape, capturing its vibrancy with powerful compositions and authentic characters.
