Born in Austria in 1902, Karl Duldig arrived in Australia in 1941. An active sportsman he was best known as a sculptor and art teacher at mentone Grammar School in Melbourne. He exhibited regularly with the Victorian Sculptors’ Society, winning their annual prize in 1956 and in private galleries. He was a leading figure among the European-trained sculptors who arrived from Europe before and after World War II, and Duldig affirmed the place of sculptural practice in Australian public and cultural experience. His studio at East Malvern is preserved as a house museum and public gallery.
The total number of works by Karl Duldig offered for sale by auction since 1987 is 16, of which 13 (81%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $6,000 for Female Figure 1969 sold by Deutscher~Menzies in March 2004. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2020. Works by Karl Duldig are held by the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and National Portrait Gallery.
