Born in 1818, James Carse was born in Edinburgh and trained at the Royal Scottish Academy. He exhibited in London in the 1860s, and came to Australia some time in that decade. In 1876 he became a foundation member of the Victorian Academy of Art and the New South Wales Academy of Art, and in 1873 won the New South Wales Academy of Arts Prize for the best oil painting. In 1880 he joined a group who left the Academy of Art to create the Art Society of New South Wales.
James Carse is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1967 of 436, of which 281 (64%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $120,000 for View of Melbourne from the Botanical Gardens 1868 sold by Deutscher~Menzies in December 2007. This year 2 works have been offered for sale.
