Born in South Australia in 1936 Ian McKay studied at East Sydney Technical College. In the early 1960s McKay visited Spain, Greece and the U.K, and taught for a semester at St. Martin’s School of Art, London. On his return to Australia, he worked part time as a teacher at National Art School (NAS) in Sydney from 1966 to 1974) while working on exhibitions and commissions. He had his first one man show in Sydney in 1966 and exhibited regularly in Sydney in the 1970s and 1980s. The Art Gallery of NSW held a survey exhibition of McKay’s works in 1984.
