About Max Steinmann
Max Steinmann was born in Switzerland, and studied at the Ecole Nationale d'Art Decoratif de Nice, (Beaux-Arts) in France for five years. He painted in Switzerland and Southern France from 1935. In 1958 he emmigrated to Australia with his family and in 1962 became a full time artsist. He produced over 1500 oil paintings between 1961 and 1994. Based in Bathurst, NSW, he travelled regularly throughout rural NSW and southern Queensland depicting many historic homesteads, landscapes and genre scenes. He was also an exceptional portrait painter. He won a number of art prizes and his work was included in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes. He is the father of artists Heinz Steinmann (b. 1943) and Evelyn Steinmann (b.1959).
Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 2008.
