Born in Victoria in 1912, Heffernan studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne. Well known as a painter and teacher, he taught at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and the Gordon Institute of Technology in Geelong. His works are represented in the National Gallery of Victoria and the Geelong Gallery.
