Born in New South Wales in 1881, Wilson was both architect and painter. He is perhaps best known for his architectural drawings which were published in such books as 'Old Colonial Architecture in New South Wales and Tasmania' and 'Grecian and Chinese Architecture'. As a watercolourist he painted in the romantic style of J J Hilder.

The total number of works by William Wilson offered for sale by auction since 1976 is 17, of which 12 (71%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $18,800 for Nine Views of the Darling Downs, Queensland c. 1893-98 sold by Deutscher~Menzies in November 2002.
