Born in Mildura, Victoria in 1927, while working as a stained glass artist, Bill Gleeson studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne from 1945 to 1950, one of his teachers being George Bell, and at Melbourne Technical College from 1953 to 1958. A watercolourist and art teacher William Gleeson taught in Victoria at secondary level from 1955 to 1961 and was a lecturer at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology 1962 to 1981. As well as exhibiting in Melbourne from 1967 to 1989 he also exhibited his graphics in America, Canada and Paris in the 1950s and 1970s.

The earliest auction listing we have for Bill Gleeson is in 1983 and in total 19 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 13 (68%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $5,750 for The Controller sold by Goodmans Auctioneers in July 2001.
