Born in 1897, Farmer studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne, and later travelled, lived and studies Europe, Japan and China. He taught art in London and Paris and showed the the Royal Academy and at the Salon. During World War II he served in a camouflage unit with the RAAF. He painted landscapes and still lifes, and he was a member of Twenty Melbourne painters Society and the Society of French Artists. A restropctive of his work was held at McClelland Gallery in 2005.

The total number of works by John Farmer offered for sale by auction since 1969 is 85, of which 60 (71%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,360 for An Album Containing an Assortment of Small Still Life Studies, Landscapes, and a Self-Portrait Dating from 1954-1986 sold by Leonard Joel in December 2011. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022. Works by John Farmer are held by the National Gallery of Australia, Geelong Gallery and a further four major public national galleries (see list below).
