Bess Whitehurst was born in South Melbourne, Victoria on 10 June 1916. At the age of 15 she began drawing lessons with the wife of noted artist R. W. Sturgess, then began flower painting in oils with Enid Phillip. Later she studied part time at the National Gallery School in Melbourne.Her painting went into hiatus for about 20 years from 1938 while she raised her family after which she returned to painting classes. She later taught painting at secondary level as well as lecturing on, and demonstrating painting, as well as judging art shows. She was a member of the Victorian Arts Society, the Geelong Art Group, the Cosmopolitan Art Group, Realist Artists, Friends of the Federation of British Artists, and the Hobsons Bay Art Society. She painted in all mediums and all subjects but is best known for her floral art and seascapes.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1988.
