David Jones was born and educated in Auckland, and studied painting and commercial design at ATI before working as a commercial artist as a freelance artist. His later studied abstract form and design under May Smith and Louise Henderson. He has exhibited throughout Australia, London and in the USA, David Jones returned to Auckland in late 1980 where he continued exhibiting. In 1988 he was the recipient of the Bledisloe Medal for New Zealand landscape painting.
We have records of art auction sales by David Jones from 1988 and in total 103 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 77 (75%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,966 for Woman in Green Landscape sold by Watson's Auctioneers in November 2007. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by David Jones are held by the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of Western Australia and a further four major public national galleries (see list below).
