Born in Scotland in 1831, James Moultray studied art at the Royal Institute in Edinburgh before becoming a picture restorer. He arrived in New Zealand in 1883 where he worked as a professional artist in Dunedin. He was the father of artists John Elder Moultray and Henry Moultray. James Moultray exhibited widely in New Zealand right up until his death in 1911.
