Margot Phillips was born in Germany, and after the death of both her parents she left Germany to live in London, and then moved to Hamilton, New Zealand in 1958 where her brother resided. She studied art at Hamilton Technical School, the Workers' Educational Association, and Ardmore Teachers' Training College. Colin McCahon mentored and taught her at Auckland Art Gallery summer school. She first exhibited in 1958, followed by other exhibitions throughout New Zealand until 1987.
