Born at sea while his parents were en route to Australia in 1917. Primarily a landscape artist working in oil, Hopgood is a naive painter who did not start painting until 1966 while recovering from a stroke. Previously a permanent army officer he lived in Broken Hill untill his death in 1992. Broken Hill Regional Gallery held a restrospective of his work in 2004.

The total number of works by Hoppy Hopgood offered for sale by auction since 1976 is 94, of which 72 (77%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,200 for The Bar Girls sold by Elder Fine Art in October 2007. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023.
