Born in England in 1855, Herbert Woodhouse arrived in Australia with his family in 1858 after working as a graphic artist in London. The fourth son of Frederick Woodhouse Senior, in the 1870s and 80s he worked as a graphic artist on various magazines and newspapers in Adelaide and he also became a sporting painter as well as a cartoonist with 'Adealide Punch' magazine. He exhibited with Victorian Academy of Arts 1867-87, the Yarra Sculptors’ Society in 1901, and the NSW Society of Artists. He also worked in Tasmania and WA in the 1890s. In 1900s he was exhibiting with the Victorian Artists’ Society in Melbourne.
