Born in Germany in 1929, Bernhard Rust studied at the School of Applied Art in Berlin from 1946 to 1948 prior to his arrival in Australia in 1949. He then studied part-time at the East Sydney Technical College from 1950 to 1957, and at Swinburne Technical College in Melbourne in 1965. he became a full time artist in 1967 and held his first exhibition in that year in Melbourne. He exhibited with the Social Realist group at the Victorian Artists Society in the 1960s and at commercial galleries in the 1970s and 1980s. He taught part-time in Melbourne at the Council of Adult Education from 1970 to 1991.
