Born near Kapunda in South Australia in 1927, attended the National Gallery School in Melbourne and then travelled overseas where he studied from 1949 to 1950 in London and Paris. He returned to Australia in 1952 and over the next ten years his own style of painting evolved. Apart from living in Sydney between 1960 and 1962, David Shannon lived in or near Melbourne for the rest of his life. He is best known for his sharp lineal cityscapes and portraits. His works are represented in state and provincial collections. He died in 1993 and a restrospective exhibition of his work was held in 2012 at the Art Gallery of Ballarat.
