Born in Brisbane in 1938, Geoffrey de Groen studied at the Julian Ashton School and North Sydney Technical College and travelled and painted Europe, America, England and Canada until 1970. He lectured at the Canberra School of Art from 1973 to 1977 and worked as a critic for the 'Canberra Times' and the 'National Times'. An abstract artist working in oils and acrylics, he held solo exhibitions of his work in most of the Australian capital cities from 1966 to 1982. In 1959 he won the Centenary Art Prize in Queensland.

The total number of works by Geoffrey De Groen offered for sale by auction since 1988 is 61, of which 42 (69%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,525 for Slithy Toves sold by Shapiro Auctioneers in December 2002. This year one work has been offered for sale.
