A late colonial artist, William Howes, painter and art teacher taught in Sydney in the 1890s. He worked in oils and watercolour and painted landscapes and seascapes mainly around the Sydney area. He exhibited at the Art Society of New South Wales in 1884. The AASD also lists several works painted in New Zealand dated 1886 and 1888.
The earliest auction listing we have for William Howes is in 1971 and in total 76 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 51 (67%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,995 for Fairy Bower, Manly sold by Christies in August 2003. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023.
