Born in Dunedin, John McIndoe studied art with Alfred O’Keefe before joining the family printing business. While serving in World War II as a Captain attached to the New Zealand Division Supply column, he was captured by German forces in Crete in May 1941, and was held a POW for the next four years. After the war an exhibition of the over 300 landscapes, portraits and sketches he completed whilst a POW, was held in London. McIndoe returned to New Zealand, working in the printing business until his retirement in 1961, and continued to paint, mainly in pastels and watercolour of the Central Otago landscape.
