A painter, art critic, administrator and teacher, Elizabeth Churcher was born in Brisbane in 1930. She studied extensively in London from the early 1950s, taught at secondary and tertiary level in Brisbane and was art critic for the 'Australian' newspaper. She was a founding member of the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane and is a member of a number of art associations. Churcher has won several art awards and is the author of 'Understanding Art' 1974. She was appointed director of the Australian National Gallery in Canberra in 1990 a position she held untill 1997.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1992.
